What brought you into the work?:

An organization was starting in Detroit and I was asked to be on the board. I sought a job as an organizer as soon as it started up. I went to a Gamaliel week-long training in November 1989 and loved what I heard and who I met. I signed a contract with Gamaliel in early 1991. Never looked back.

Civil Rights

Share an accomplishment or list accomplishments from your career in organizing.:

Securing a multi-million HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) from the Justic Dept. in 1996 for Wayne County treatment, interdiction and prevention. We did this out of our "Save Zone" neighborhood organizing project and in collaboration with mayors, police chiefs and agencies throughout the county. It was our first metro issue and our first 3000+ MOSES Public Meeting.

What are the barriers to successful community organizing in this country? How can we overcome these barriers?:

A whole "system" that organizes our entire lives on race and class-Made manifest in the ways this nation builds metropolitan regions-stealing from the poor in the center and giving to the rich- all under the cover of urban sprawl and progress.
