Organizer Profile

What brought you into the work?:

It was a familiar grassroots effort. My grandfather co-founded the TFW. As I was growing up. I witnessed and contributed to the cause as a member of the famiily and as a volunteer. I partook in rallying, organizing, assisted in fund-raising for the March for Human Rights that began in 1977.

Share 3 lessons you have learned through your work in organizing.:

Always find and assemble a steering committee with individual resources. Establish an effective plan of action. And ensure a second plan with additional contact information for fund-raising campaigns.

What movements or political moments have most influenced your organizing career?:

The March for Farm Workers Human Rights. It became a story to pass on to the coming generations. Because of its impact and contribution to the betterment of the local farmworker i.e. better wages, right to unionize, and better living conditions. It has become a part of our history through universities and books.

Share an accomplishment or list accomplishments from your career in organizing.:

TFW provide me tools through my own personal experience as a volunteer. It instilled good leadership qualities, good moral decisions, and a good basis for my approach in educating and empowering our demographic. Through an artistic and theatrical approach, our assemblies within our local area schools and communities, have made a positive contribution to the local area artistic communities growth and stabilization. Thus implementing its success in raising awareness about our heritage, customs, and culture.

What are the barriers to successful community organizing in this country? How can we overcome these barriers?:

Our demographic has become a target. It has suffered through immigrant and geographical barriers set forth by our Government. This limits our potential despite being a highly exploited race. Our commerce was influenced by our culture. Yet as human beings who happen to be labeled "immigrant", we continue to stand against such oppression. This hinders a sound and unified front within our own communities.

Are you still in organizing? If not, in what other fields have you worked? What are you doing now?:

No. Although I am an event coordinator. I have utilized my experience in theater. I am a screenwriter, an actor, and a contributor to the perfoming arts. I founded The Association Of Reel Mexicans (ARM) Productions, a database that offers opportunities to local area artistic communities.
