Organizer Profile
I became involved in organizing because of my great frustration with protesting the Viet Nam War. My faith challenged me to work with people to put their faith in concrete action in the communities where they lived. A great flood in Wilkes Barre, PA brought my first organizing opportunity. The United Church of Christ and the Lutheran Church of America raised money for a three year project to organize flood victims so that they would have a voice in long term flood recovery decisions. My previous work with the local Welfare Rights Organization helped me get the job.
It's important to have clear boundaries in your life and allow time for things other than organizing. The people closest to the problem must be involved in determining their own solutions. Always be looking to learn so you can continue your own professional development.

Martin Luther King, Jr. - Southern Christain Leadership Conference
Although now semi retired, the election of Barack Obama has and will have a great influence on organizing. Bayard Rustin and the organizing work in the civil rights movement have been a constant study for me and an example to leaders I have developed The farm workers movement ash been an inspiration and reference point for me and leaders. Union organizing with John L. Lewis has proven valuable also.

One of the greatest barriers to successful organizing in this country is resources - both human and financial. There are more organizing opportunities than there are trained staff and the finances to support them. Another barrier is the continuing consolidation of wealth. Fewer corporations have more money and power. Very few decisions are made locally making access to the decision makers more difficult. The "Obma Bump" has opened up community organizing to a young and inspired generation and they must be able to find a way to continue to organize once they start to raise families.
I'm working part time for the PICO National Network as a Consultant to five local PICO projects. This averages about 1.5 days a week. Some of the rest of the time I grow vegetables in seven raised beds. My exercise consists of walking biking and swimming. I'm Chair of the Ministry of Outreach, Mission and Service at First Congregational Church of Berkeley.
